HAMPTON, Va. – Behind dominant pitching from Cole Roberts and a timely two-run double from Kaleb Freeman, Georgia State closed out its series against Old Dominion with a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium.
Roberts (4-1) was electric on the mound, delivering seven shutout innings while allowing just three hits and striking out five. The right-hander worked efficiently, keeping the Monarchs off balance and escaping the few scoring threats he faced. Jacob Crews (S, 3) came on in relief in the eighth and locked down the win, striking out four while allowing one run on two hits.
The Panthers (16-9, 4-2 SBC) struggled to generate offense early against ODU starter Blake Morgan, who struck out nine over six innings. However, Georgia State finally broke through in the sixth when William Maginnis launched a solo home run to left field, putting the Panthers ahead 1-0.
In the seventh, Georgia State added two crucial insurance runs. CJ Blackwell was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then stole second. After Jae Williams worked a walk, Freeman ripped a double into left-center, scoring both runners to extend the lead to 3-0.
Old Dominion (7-14, 3-3 SBC) made a push in the ninth, finally getting on the board when Tanner Schaedel lined an RBI double to left-center. However, with the tying run at the plate, Crews struck out the final batter to seal the victory.
Freeman finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Maginnis added two hits, including his solo homer. Blackwell also doubled and stole a base for the Panthers.
