ATLANTA –
John Beverley hit two triples and Georgia State exploded for eight runs in the final two innings of their 10-0 (7 innings) run-rule victory over Alabama A&M (2-9) to complete the sweep and back a combined two-hit shutout by
Ross Norman and
Jake Hembree at the GSU Baseball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Georgia State (9-2) has now won 9-of-11 games to open the season, which equals their best 11-game start since 2011. Current head coach
Brad Stromdahl was an assistant coach on that 2011 Panther squad.
A true freshman from Lawrenceville, Ga., Beverley became the sixth Panther in program history to triple twice in the same game, equaling a program single-game record. Both triples were his first collegiate hits as the outfielder went 2-for-3 with three RBI's.
Jae Williams also went 2-for-3, and
Michael Maginnis and
Carter Bailey each led GSU with three hits. Maginnis drove in three runs on a home run that hit the light pole behind the left field wall in the seventh inning, and Bailey had two RBI's
Ross Norman (2-1) and
Jake Hembree combined for seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts. Norman got the start and pitched the first six innings, allowing just two hits with a career-high eight strikeouts, and then Hembree pitched in the seventh and walked two batters, ending GSU's streak of 15 straight innings without a walk, but got all three of his outs via strikeout to preserve the shutout.
GSU led 2-0 entering the seventh when
Jae Williams led off the inning with an infield single, advanced to second on a walk, and scored on a base-hit through the left side by
Michael Maginnis.
Carter Bailey then drove in one more run with another base hit through the left side, and after a popout, a walk by
Cole Griffith to load the bases, and a strikeout, Beverley hit a base-clearing triple down the right field line to make it 7-0. The Panthers would then clinch the run-rule victory in the seventh on Maginnis' two-run blast and a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Jack Holley.
With runners on first and second in the first inning, GSU jumped out front on an RBI single in the first, and then extended that lead in the fourth when Beverley tripled for his first collegiate hit and scored on an error to make it 2-0.
Georgia State will travel to Montgomery, Alabama to face Alabama State on Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m.
