Middlebrooks, Mumpfield Hit Back-to-Back Homers Against Mercer

ATLANTA -- Chloe Middlebrooks recorded her third home run of the season, and Mumpfield followed up with her first of the season, but the Panthers ultimately fell 8-6 to Mercer on Wednesday evening. 

Georgia State received contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely. The Panthers were paced by junior Maia Mumpfield, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBIs. Senior Chloe Middlebrooks put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Lauren Brister also chipped in for Georgia State, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding two RBI.

Senior Sydney Boulware (2-7) started and took the loss in the circle for Georgia State (14-12).


HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 5-0, the Panthers first put runs on the board in the third inning. Georgia State scored two runs on solo shots from Middlebrooks and Mumpfield.

The Panthers deficit expanded to 7-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fourth inning. The Georgia State offense exploded for four runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Brister, which brought the score to 7-6 in favor of the Bears. The Panthers were unable to get any closer, as Mercer added one run to their tally on the way to an 8-6 final.
