BOCA RATON –
Ryleigh Garrett recorded her first career hit as Georgia State fell 5-1 to Florida Atlantic at Joan Joyce Field on Friday evening in the debut of new head coach Becca Owens.
A freshman from Dallas, Ga., Garrett came to the plate for her first at-bat in the third inning and promptly smacked an RBI double to score
Ashton Schroyer, who hit a lead-off triple to left center in the previous at-bat.
Garrett, Schroyer, and Mackenzie Walker, who legged out an infield single in the sixth inning, managed the only hits for Georgia State (0-1) as the Panther bats struggled in a game that lasted into midnight after starting late due to the extended length of prior games at the field.
Autumn Courtney (2-0) tossed a complete game for Florida Atlantic (4-0), recording 13 strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
Panther starter
Sydney Boulware (0-1) threw for 5.1 innings, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
Emily Hodnett came on to pitch in the sixth inning and recorded the final two outs.
GSU will face Clemson at 11:15 a.m. and Wisconsin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 8 for the second day of the Paradise Classic at Florida Atlantic.
