Panthers Battle but Come Up Short in 3-1 Tournament Loss

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Georgia State men's soccer saw its season end Sunday afternoon in the Sun Belt Championship quarterfinals, falling 3-1 to No. 2-seed Marshall at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Senior midfielder Gavin Williams scored the Panthers' lone goal, while goalkeeper Loan Marin made five saves.

Marshall struck first in the 17th minute when Takahiro Fujita finished a cross from Carl Romberg to put the Herd ahead 1-0. Georgia State responded almost immediately. Just 44 seconds later, Gavin Williams buried a shot from inside the box to level the match at 1-1, his first goal of the season.

The Herd regained the lead before halftime. In the 41st minute, defender Joao Roberto scored off a buildup from Gabriel Stevanato and Romberg to push Marshall ahead 2-1 heading into the break.

Both sides traded chances early in the second half, with Hideto Gondo and Williams testing the Marshall defense, but the Panthers were unable to find an equalizer.

Marshall added an insurance goal in the 80th minute when Louie Salkeld converted another setup from Romberg, extending the lead to 3-1.

Georgia State continued to push late, earning three second-half corner kicks and generating eight shots after halftime. Midfielder Sandro Rabarivony led the Panthers with four total attempts, while Samir-Mohamed Djeha put one on target in the opening minutes.

Marin kept GSU within reach throughout the afternoon, finishing with five saves against 16 Marshall shots. The Panthers recorded 11 shots of their own, including three on goal.

Georgia State ends the season 4-8-6 overall and 2-4-3 in Sun Belt play.
