Tucker, Faddoul Score as Panthers Win Rivalry Match in Statesboro

STATESBORO, Ga. – Georgia State women's soccer picked up a key Sun Belt road victory Thursday night, defeating in-state rival Georgia Southern 2-1 at Bo Pitts Field. Junior forward Aaliyah Faddoul scored the game-winner in the 59th minute, while sophomore Sunniyah Tucker struck early to set the tone.

The Panthers wasted no time seizing the lead. In the 12th minute, Tucker took a feed from defender Briana Hill, cut inside across the top of the box, and curled a left-footed shot into the far upper corner for her third goal of the season, putting GSU ahead 1-0.

Georgia State held that lead into the break behind a disciplined defensive effort from the back line of Lily Sawyer, Therese Brink, and Briana Hill, which limited the Eagles to just four first-half shots.

Georgia Southern equalized in the 57th minute when Addison Comer broke through the middle on a through ball from Olivia Golden, rounding goalkeeper Alondra Iriarte to slot home the tying goal.

But the Panthers responded just two minutes later. In the 59th minute, Faddoul latched onto a clever slip pass from senior Brook Nelson and finished low inside the far post to restore the lead at 2-1. The goal was Faddoul's fourth of the season.

Georgia Southern pushed forward late but played the final 15 minutes down a player after Kendall Wilson was sent off with a second yellow card in the 75th minute. Iriarte and the GSU defense held strong, with Iriarte recording one save and the Panthers successfully defending five Georgia Southern corner kicks.

Faddoul led the GSU attack with four shots, two on target, while Tucker had two shots with one on frame. Georgia Southern finished with a 16-9 advantage in total shots but only managed two on goal.

The win lifts Georgia State to 7-5-1 overall and 3-2 in Sun Belt play, while Georgia Southern dropped to 2-8-3 and 0-3-2 in the league.

The Panthers will return home for their next match, hosting Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Complex.
