Panthers Host Old Dominion for Weekend Matchup

ATLANTA-- After defeating Coastal Carolina on Wednesday, the Panthers return to the Convocation Canter on Saturday to host Old Dominion. 


Georgia State and Old Dominion are meeting for the 20th time in program history. The Panthers are 1-18 in the series after falling 61-57 to the Monarchs on Feb. 24, 2024.  


TOP STORY LINES: 

> After falling to Coastal Carolina on the road just one week earlier, the Panthers defeated the Chanticleers 75-72 at home on Jan. 22. Senior Mya Williams scored a career-high 24 points and went 9-for-9 from the three-point line to lead the Panthers to victory, breaking the program record for single-game three pointers. 

> After falling in game one against Georgia Southern, Georgia State defeated the Eagles in a triple-overtime decision on the road on Jan. 18. In the 88-83 win, the Panthers tied the program record for single-game three-pointers. Kaleigh Addie led the Panthers at the three-point line, going 5-for-7 from deep. 

> Georgia State clinched its first conference win at Texas State after three Panthers (Mikyla Tolivert, Crystal Henderson and Mya Williams) scored in double figures to lead the Panthers to a 59-51 win over the Bobcats. After trailing throughout the game, GSU went on a 22-6 run in the fourth quarter to secure the win. 

>The Panthers defeated Sewanee 107-49 to mark one of the largest margins of victory in program history (9th in program history).

> Georgia State opened the season with three Power 5 opponents, including Georgia Tech, Georgia and Alabama. Its season was highlighted by a 66-60 upset over Georgia. 

 

STATE IN THE SUN BELT: 

> Led by Mikyla Tolivert, who is sixth in the conference in free-throw percentage, Georgia State ranks fourth in the conference in overall free throw percentage, averaging 71.7. 

> The Panthers lead the Sun Belt in blocks per-game, averaging 4.3 pg. Mahogany Matthews, who leads the Panthers in blocks, also leads the conference and ranks sixth in the nation for total blocks with 50. She also leads the conference and ranks sixth in the nation for blocks per-game with 2.63. 

> Led by Mya Williams, the Panthers also rank fourth in the conference for three-pointers per game (7.5). 

> The Panthers also rank top 10 in the Sun Belt for steals pg (2nd/ 11.2), turnovers forced per-game (4th/ 19.84) assist/turnover ratio (9th/ 0.77) and three-point percentage (6th/ 31.8). 

> The Panthers finished the 2023-24 season ranking third in the Sun Belt in blocks per game (3.2) and bench points (23.7), which finished 38 in the nation. The Panthers also finished fourth in the conference in assists per game (13.6) and steals (9.6). 

 

TRACKING THE RECORD: 

> Mya Williams' nine 3-pointers made in the Panthers win over Coastal Carolian (Jan. 22) broke the program record for single-game threes, which was set in 2002. 

> Senior Mikyla Tolivert stands at 7th overall in the program for free throws made with 293. She is 16 free-throws away from taking the No. 6 spot of 308. 

> Tolivert joined the Panthers' thousand-point club after scoring her thousandth career point in the Panthers' win over Western Carolina (Nov. 19).

> Tolivert hit the record book in numerous occasions during the 2023-24 season, ranking third overall in program history for career free-throw percentage (80.7). She entered the single-game records five times last season; twice for single-game points, twice for single game free-throws made and once for single-game assists.


BIG TWO: Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team Guard Miklya Tolivert is the Panthers' leading scorer with 13.3 ppg

> The senior guard's 77.5 free-throw percentage leads the team and ranks sixth in the Sun Belt. 

> Tolivert averages 4.4 rpg, 2.55 apg and 36 steals, which is tied for the second-most steals on the team. 


CRYSTAL CLEAR:  Sophomore leader Crystal Henderson, named to the 2024 preseason All-Sun Belt First Team, is third on the Panthers' leaderboard with 10.0 ppg,. She leads the team in assists (86) and steals (49). Henderson averages 2.6 rpg. 

> Her 46 steals ranks second in the conference and ranks top 50 in the nation.  She leads the conference in steals per-game, averaging 2.58. 

> Henderson is also second in the Sun Belt for total assists (86). Her 4.5 assists per-game also ranks second in the conference. She is also second in the conference with a 1.79 assist/turnover ratio. 

> Henderson is third on the team in three-point percentage (36.2) after going 17-for-47 from deep. 

SHARP SHOOTERS: 

> Junior guard Kaleigh Addie is second on the Panthers leaderboard with 11.3 ppg. She has the best field goal accuracy on the team, averaging 43.6 percent in the paint. 

> She is second on the team in three-pointers, averaging 37.7 percent. 

> Addie averages 2.2 rpg and 1.0 apg. 

> Senior Mya Williams continues to lead the Panthers' squad in three-pointers made through another year, totaling 35 made and averaging 37.6 percent from deep.  

> The senior guard is fourth on the Panthers' leaderboard with 9.7 ppg, 2.5 rpg and 12 assists. 

> Williams broke the program record for single-season threes after going 9-for-9 in the Panthers win over Coastal Carolina (Jan. 22). 

 

THE BIGS: 

> Graduate transfer Mahogany Matthews leads the team and Sun Belt, and is top 10 in the nation, for blocks (50, ranked 6th nationally) and blocks per-game (2.63 pg, ranked 6th nationally).  

> Matthews averages 7.6 ppg and 4.3 rpg with 18 assists. 

> The veteran forward is second on the team in field-goal accuracy, averaging 43.0 after going 58-for-135 in the paint. 
> In her second year at Georgia State, Patience Williams leads the Panthers in rebounding, averaging 5.5 rpg. She averages 4.6 ppg and totals 17 assists.  
> The junior forward notched a career-high 18 points against Troy (Jan. 11).
 

After facing Old Dominion at home, the Panthers travel to Norfolk, Va. to face the Monarchs again, on the road.
