ATLANTA— Georgia State football has hired three additions, and elevated four previous coaches, to the Panthers' football staff, head coach Dell McGee announced.
Georgia State welcomes Deron Wilson as the Georgia State defensive coordinator. Wilson, who has eight years of collegiate coaching experience, comes to Georgia State after serving as an assistant for Arkansas for two years.
Under the leadership of Wilson, defensive assistant Charles "CJ" Wilford also joins the Panthers staff as a safeties coach. Wilford comes from Florida, where he served as the quality control- defense assistant. Wilford also stood as the defensive back's quality control assistant for Louisiana for three seasons.
The Panthers also welcome offensive line coach Bryant Ross, who comes to Georgia State from Louisiana. Ross, who worked with the Ragin' Cajuns' offensive line from 2018-20, returned to Lafayette after spending the 2021 season at Grambling, where he served as the offensive line coach and Run Game Coordinator.
Georgia State football has elevated assistant defensive line coach Jeremy Hawkins to the assistant head coach of the Panthers. Hawkins joined the Georgia State staff as defensive line coach from Eastern Kentucky, where he spent four seasons as defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator. He previously worked on the staffs at Mercer, LSU and UAB. In 2021, Hawkins was named to the AFCA's 35 Under 35 list.
Additionally, former Assistant General Manager of Football Hue Jackson was elevated to offensive coordinator after the retirement of former offensive coordinator Jim Chaney. Jackson joined the Georgia State staff as the recruiting operations coordinator in June 2024 after serving as the 14th head coach in the Grambling State University football program. Jackson, who has more than 30 years of coaching experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, began his coaching career in 198 at the University of the Pacific, his Alma mater, and spent a majority of the next 13 years in the college ranks. He then moved to the professional ranks in 2001 and remained in the National Football League until 2019.
Offensive analyst Jess Sutherland and Graduate assistant Juwan Taylor were also elevated to position coaches. Sutherland will stand as the Panthers' tight end's coach, while Taylor will serve as the inside linebacker's coach.
