Baseball standout Matt Ruiz is the Center Parc Credit Union Student-Athlete of the Week after hitting five home runs and in five games last week while driving in 12 runs.

The senior center fielder a lifted Georgia State to a dramatic win at Mercer on Wednesday. In a tie game with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, he came off the bench and belted a pinch hit, 3-run homer to send the Panthers to the 14-11 win, capping Georgia State's rally from an early 8-1 deficit. 

Ruiz, from Miami, Fla., capped the week by homering twice and driving in five runs in Sunday's 17-8 win at Marshall. He hit a 2-run homer in the third inning to put the Panthers ahead, and then one inning later, he belted a 3-run blast.

He also hit a solo homer Tuesday vs. Jacksonville State and a 2-run homer Friday at Marshall, giving him three straight games with a home run.

Ruiz has helped the Panthers lead the Sun Belt with 83 home runs, the second-best season total in GSU history, behind only last year's school record of 110.

Georgia State plays at Coastal Carolina this weekend in a Sun Belt series that opens Friday at 6 p.m. in Conway, S.C.
