Boynton Homers Again But Panthers Suffer Late Loss

ATLANTA -- Luke Boynton homered for the second straight day, but Georgia State fell to Georgia Southern as the Eagles broke a 7-7 tie with a 2-run homer in the eighth inning to win 9-7.

Georgia State (15-16, 7-5) dropped all three games at Georgia Southern (18-14, 8-4).

Sunday's back-and-forth game featured five lead changes, and the game was tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Sean White's 2-run homer gave the Eagles the lead for good.

Georgia State jumped in front in the first inning as Maximus Martin led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and then scored on Luke Boynton's ground ball that was mishandled by the shortstop.

Georgia Southern scored four runs in the second inning, aided by three walks and two hit batters. But Georgia State responded immediately with four runs in the third to take a 5-4 lead.

Boynton led off the inning with a solo homer, his second of the series and seventh of the season. The senior first baseman returned to the lineup this weekend after missing nearly a month due to injury and went 4-for-7 with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored while drawing five walks.

Michael Maginnis followed Boynton with a single, stole second and scored on Jesse Donohoe's single up the middle. Dylan Strickland doubled down the third base line to bring home Donohoe with the tying run and then scored on an RBI-grounder by Colin Hynek.

After Georgia Southern moved ahead 6-5 with a pair of runs in the fourth, including a leadoff homer by Jarrett Brown, the Panthers again responded with two runs in the fifth. Maginnis and Donohoe led off with back-to-back singles, and Maginnis scored on a throwing error by the third baseman, who caught Strickland's line drive but threw wildly to first base trying to double off Donohoe. Then Hynek put Georgia State ahead 7-6 with an RBI-single.

That remained the score until White's homer in the eighth.

Georgia State plays at Jacksonville State Tuesday before returning home to host Southern Miss in a three-game series next weekend.
