ATLANTA -- Georgia State scored eight runs in the first inning en route to a 16-6 (7) run-rule victory over Alabama State Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex.
Jesse Donohoe,
Brennan Hudson and
JoJo Jackson drove in two runs each and
Will Mize went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Panthers (21-19).
GSU sent 12 men to the plate and collected eight hits in the first inning, including an RBI-single by Dohonoe, a 2-run double by Hudson, a 2-run single by Jackson, a run-scoring single by
Matt Ruiz and sacrifice fly by
Maximus Martin.
The Panthers added single runs in the second and third innings and two more in the fourth on run-scoring ground outs by
Ryan Dyal and
Luke Boynton to lead 12-1 after four.
Alabama State (19-20) managed a run in the fifth and then four in the sixth to cut their deficit to 12-6, but Georgia State answered in the bottom half.
Kameron Douglas smacked a double to center field to drive in one run and later scored on error for a 14-6 advantage.
In the seventh, Donohoe drove in one run on a fielder's choice, and then
Dylan Strickland's sacrifice fly provided the "walk-off," invoking the run rule and ending the game.
On a staff day, GSU starter
Keegan Rich (1-0) pitched three innings and struck out four, allowing one run three hits.
Tyler Roche threw three innings, and then
Ryan Lamar finished the game with a scoreless seventh inning.
Georgia State plays a second midweek game Wednesday with a 4 p.m. game at Presbyterian, and then the Panthers return home to host a Sun Belt Conference series vs. Appalachian State, beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
