Panthers Hit 6 Homers to Clinch Series with Second-Straight Run-Rule Over Southern Miss

ATLANTA -- Georgia State hit six home runs, including two each by Michael Maginnis and Brennan Hudson, to lead the Panthers to their second straight run-rule victory over Southern Miss, 19-8, and clinch their Sun Belt Conference series Saturday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The Panthers (18-16) improved to 9-5 in the Sun Belt, tied for second place behind Louisiana. After scoring 37 runs in the first two games against the Golden Eagles, Georgia State has already scored its most runs in a Sun Belt Conference series.

Hudson's second homer of the day was a 3-run blast that ended the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. The sophomore from Cumming, Ga. (South Forsyth High School) also homered in the first inning and went 4-for-5 today with two homers, four RBI and three runs scored.

Maginnis, the sophomore left fielder from Newnan, was 3-for-5 with two homers, four RBI and three runs.

Georgia State's six home runs today are the most by the Panthers since 2010 and equal the second-best single-game in program history (the GSU record is nine). The Panthers pounded out 19 hits and scored in all seven innings. Every Panther who batted today scored at least one run and nine of the 10 had at least one hit.

JoJo Jackson also drove in four runs today with a 2-run homer and a 2-run double. Jesse Donohoe hit a 2-run homer, Will Mize drove in three runs, and Maximus Martin had four hits for the Panthers, including a triple and two doubles.

After allowing three runs in the first inning, GSU responded immediately with four runs in the bottom half. Mize singled home Martin, who led off with double, Maginnis hit a 2-run homer and Hudson followed with a solo shot to give the Panthers a 4-3 lead. Maginnis and Hudson homered in the first inning for the second straight game.

The game was tied at 6-all when the Panthers took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. After Martin led off with a triple off the center field wall, Donohoe hit a 2-run homer, and then Maginnis made it back-to-back jacks with a solo shot for a 9-6 lead.

Georgia State added four more in the fifth. Jackson hit a 2-run homer, Martin doubled and scored on a wild pitch, and Maginnis delivered a 2-out RBI single up the middle to give the Panthers a 13-7 lead after five.

The Panthers extended their lead with three runs in the sixth on an RBI-single by Jackson and a 2-run double by Mize, and then Hudson ended the game with his 3-run homer in the seventh.

GSU reliever Brady Jones (3-0) came on the third inning and earned the victory with 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with  three strikeouts. Patrick Dunn finished the game with 1.2 innings, allowing just one run one hit.

The series finale is Sunday at 1 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
