ATLANTA, GA -- Mya Williams led the court with 19 points to lead the Panthers to a 74-49 victory over Georgia Southern Saturday at the GSU Convocation Center, giving the Panthers a season-sweep over their in-state rival.Â
"You have to do whatever it takes to win," head coach Gene Hill said. "A lot of people chipped in today, and it keeps us on track with what we're trying to do in the conference this season."
The Georgia State women's basketball team got a 30-point showing from the bench on the way to winning their second straight game and fourth in the last five.
The Panthers (13-8, 7-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Mya Williams, who had 19 points. Christeina Bryan added 11 points, and Alyssa Phillip added seven points, 13 rebounds and two blocks.
Georgia State collected 51 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Georgia Southern's 44, led by Phillip's 13 boards. The Panthers also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 20 rebounds into 17 second chance points.
The Georgia State defense held Georgia Southern shooters to only 26.9 percent from the field, including 26.7 percent from three-point range.
How It Happened
Georgia State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 14-11.
Georgia State then cut the Eagles lead to 15-14 before going on a 9-0 run to take a 23-15 lead. The Panthers proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 30-21 advantage heading into halftime. Georgia State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 19 points.
Georgia State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Williams, to expand its lead further to 38-24 with 6:08 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Panthers added two points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 56-40 edge. Georgia State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 10 of the team's 26 third-quarter points.
Georgia State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 63-43 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Kamryn Dziak's three, to grow the lead to 71-43 with 4:22 to go in the contest. The Eagles narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Panthers still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-49 win. Georgia State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 18 points.
