ATLANTA -- Four players scored in double figures, led by Toneari Lane with 17 points and Lucas Taylor with 15, as Georgia State cruised to a 73-53 win over Miami (Ohio) in the Sun Belt-MAC Challenge Saturday at the GSU Convocation Center.
The Panthers won their second straight game and completed a season sweep of their Sun Belt-MAC Challenge games after winning at Western Michigan in November.
Georgia State led almost the entire game, building a 35-25 advantage at the half. Miami opened the second half by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to four points, but GSU quickly responded with a steal and layup by Taylor and then a trey by Lane. From there, the RedHawks never got closer than five points. Leading 53-44 with 11 minutes to play, Georgia State scored nine straight points to build a 20-point advantage with eight minutes to go. The Panthers shot 56 percent from the field in the second half.
Miami entered the game as one of the nation's top 3-point shooting teams, connecting on 37 percent from long-range to rank No. 35 in Division I, but the GSU defense limited the RedHawks to just 6-for-31 (19.4 percent) on the day. The 53 points and 31 percent shooting from the field allowed by Georgia State are the lows against the Panthers this season by a Division I opponent.
"First I would like to give a lot credit to Miami of Ohio. I have much respect for their head coach Travis Steele; I've spent a lot of time with him, and he he is one of the great coaches I've had the privilege of working with," head coach Jonas Hayes said.Â
"But keeping the narrative on Georgia State, today was another step in the right direction. When our guys are committed to playing as hard for as long as they did today, we can be a really tough team to play.Â
"We had a lull for about five minutes today, but as a testament to our maturity and growth, we were able to weather that and reassert our selves," Hayes continued. "They are a tough scout because the run a lot of stuff, but our guys were committed to the game plan, committed to playing hard and committed to playing together.
"Even when we don't get the result that we want, the way our guys have attacked these last four games will give us a chance to win a lot of ballgames. We have to keep showing up and being consistent with our effort. I will be able to live with the result if our effort and our intensity and our physicality are where it has been at the last four games."
Georgia State's post tandem of Leslie Nkereuwem and Edward Nnamoko combined for 18 points and 11 rebounds. Nnamoko followed his 9-point, 6-rebound, 2-block performance in Wednesday's win at Louisiana with four points and nine rebounds.
Nkereuwem contributed 14 today after scoring 16 at Louisiana. He went 6-for-8 from the field today, including the fifth-year senior's first career 3-pointer.
Dwon Odom had 10 points, three rebounds and six assists as well as three blocked shots for the 6-foot-2 point guard.
Lane hit five of the Panthers' nine 3-pointers.
Georgia State heads back on the road for a pair of Sun Belt games next week at James Madison Thursday and then at Old Dominion Saturday.
