Georgia State Fights Back for 3-3 Draw Against Fourth-Ranked Marshall

ATLANTA, -- Georgia State staged a thrilling comeback to earn a 3-3 draw against No. 4 Marshall on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the GSU Soccer Complex. After falling behind 2-0 in the opening five minutes, the Panthers fought back in the second half with goals from Matt Taylor in the 56th and 86th minutes and Justin Mclean's equalizer in the 89th minute. Georgia State goalkeeper Finn Marchisen made eight saves to keep the Panthers in the game as they battled back to secure a hard-earned point against a top-ranked opponent.

How it Happened

Marshall took a 1-0 lead when Lineker Rodrigues Dos Santos scored in the second minute, assisted by Aleksa Janjic.

The Thundering Herd took a 2-0 lead on a goal from Takahiro Fujita in the fourth minute, assisted by Taimu Okiyoshi.

Georgia State got on the board to make it a 2-1 game on Taylor's 55th-minute goal, his third of the season. Pavel Romero-Garmendia assisted the goal.

The Thundering Herd made it a 3-1 lead with an 81st-minute goal from Rodrigues Dos Santos, assisted by Tarik Pannholzer and Okiyoshi.

Georgia State narrowed the gap on Marshall to make it a 3-2 game on Taylor's fourth goal of the season in the 85th minute.

The Panthers evened the game at 3-3 thanks to Justin McLean's fifth goal of the season, scored in the 88th minute. Yuki Nakamura assisted the goal. The 3-3 held to the finish.

Game Notes

  • Finn Marchisen recorded eight saves for the Panthers out of 22 Thundering Herd shots.
  • Georgia State scored one unassisted goal.
  • Georgia State registered six shots on goal

The draw moved Georgia State's record to 3-7-5 overall and 0-4-3 in Sun Belt action.

The Panthers return to the pitch on Friday, Nov. 1, for their final road match as they face James Madison at 7:00 p.m.
