MOBILE -- Lucas Taylor scored 22 points, Toneari Lane had 20 and four other Panthers scored in double figures to lead Georgia State to a 90-76 win at South Alabama Saturday at the Mitchell Center as GSU moved to 2-1 in Sun Belt Conference play.
Georgia State (7-7, 2-1 Sun Belt) shot a season-high 55 percent from the field, including 10-for-21 on 3-pointers as Lane nailed six treys and Taylor added three. The Panthers shot almost 60 percent in the second half while holding South Alabama to 39 percent to turn a two-point halftime lead into the 14-point victory.
Jay'Den Turner notched his third straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, along with a career-high five steals. Leslie Nkereuwem added 13 points and seven rebounds, and Dwon Odom and Brenden Tucker scored 10 points apiece.
"We played with great energy from the opening tip, and we sustained it throughout the game," head coach Jonas Hayes said. "We played unselfishly on offense, and we competed on defense with the toughness and tenacity that we needed to get a quality win.
"I'm extremely proud of our guys. Our team grew up some more today, and now the next step is to sustain this from game to game."
Georgia State led 63-59 with nine minutes left. Tucker's layup extended the lead to six, and then Lane scored the Panthers' next eight points to stretch the lead to 71-63 with seven minutes to play. Lane, the transfer from Winthrop, made a driving layup off a feed from Tucker. He was fouled on the play and missed the free throw, but Turner grabbed the offensive rebound, leading to a 3-pointer by Lane for a 5-point possession. Then Lane hit another 3-pointer in transition for the 12-point advantage.
From there, the Jaguars (8-7, 1-2) could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Nkereuwem had eight points and six rebounds in the first half, but he sat out much of the second half with foul trouble. In his absence, sophomore post player Edward Nnamoko contributed nine valuable minutes, collecting two points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
Georgia State returns home for its next four games, beginning next Thursday, Jan. 11, when the Panthers host Old Dominion at 7 p.m. at the GSU Convocation Center. For tickets, visit GeorgiaStateSports.com/tix.
