ATLANTA, GA -- Mikyla Tolivewrt led the Panthers with 16 points, but the Panthers ultimately fell 90-78 to the Marshall Thundering Herd at home Thursday.
The Georgia State women's basketball team got a 34-point performance from the bench, but fell 90-78 to the Marshall Thundering Herd at home Thursday.
The Panthers (8-6, 2-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Mikyla Tolivert, who had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Mya Williams tacked on 13 points and Kaleigh Addie chipped in as well with 10 points off of the bench.
Georgia State utilized great ball movement in Thursday's game, piling up 16 assists on 29 made field goals. Individually, Crystal Henderson was on top of the distribution list for the Panthers with five assists.
How It Happened
After falling behind 1-0, Georgia State went on a 12-0 run with 9:13 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Erin Turral, to take a 12-1 lead. The Panthers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 20-18 advantage. Georgia State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 20 points close to the basket.
The Panthers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 40-34.
Marshall continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 62-42 advantage before Georgia State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Turral, to trim its deficit to 62-47 with 51 seconds to go in the third. Marshall countered and stretched its lead to 67-47 heading into the fourth. Georgia State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 13 of the team's 13 third-quarter points.
Georgia State kept the Thundering Herd from increasing their lead before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Alyssa Phillip's layup, to shrink the deficit to 71-58 with 6:00 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept their comeback going, but Marshall managed to hold on for the 90-78 win. Georgia State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 24 of its 31 points in the paint.
