ATLANTA -- Georgia State quarterback
Darren Grainger is the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Panthers to a 41-25 win over Charlotte and the first 3-0 start in program history. Grainger also garnered national recognition, including the Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8, the Manning Award Stars of the Week list, and the PFF College Offensive Team of the Week.
The senior from Conway, S.C., passed for a career-high 466 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for a fourth score. He completed 27 of 33 passes with no interceptions. He connected on 81.8 percent of his passes on the day while averaging 14.1 yards per attempt.
Grainger opened the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run. Then he hooked up with
Robert Lewis for a 97-yard touchdown pass that is the longest play from scrimmage in Georgia State history.
On Georgia State's opening drive of the third quarter, he connected with
Tailique Williams for a 78-yard touchdown pass, giving Grainger two of the five longest passes in program history in this game. He also had a 59-yard completion to Lewis down to the 1-yard line to set up another score.
With 466 yards, Grainger came within five yards of the GSU single-game record (471 yards by Nick Arbuckle in 2015). His 489 yards of total offense is also the second-best single=game total in program history, just seven yards behind the record.
For the season, Grainger leads the Sun Belt in total offense with 339.7 ypg (No. 8 in FBS) while completing 73 percent of his passes with six touchdowns. He also leads the Sun Belt in pass efficiency while ranking second in passing yards (267.7).
Grainger and the Panthers have a quick turnaround with a nationally-televised Thursday night game at Coastal Carolina (7:30 p.m. on ESPN). This will be Grainger's second game in his hometown after leading Georgia State to a 42-40 at then nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina in 2021.
