Panthers Fall in Extra Innings to No. 19 Coastal Carolina

ATLANTA -- Georgia State fell 8-6 in 10 innings to No. 19 Coastal Carolina Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The Panthers (14-14, 4-5) scored four runs in the bottom in the eighth inning to take a 6-3 lead, but Coastal (18-7, 7-2) tied the game with three in the top of the ninth and then scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the 10th to sweep the series.

Trailing 3-2 in the eighth, Georgia State loaded the bases with no outs as Cameron Jones singled, JoJo Jackson walked and Matt Ruiz legged out a bunt single. Then Will Mize put the Panthers ahead with a 2-run single to left center.

Another bunt single by Michael Maginnis loaded the bases again, and Dalton Pearson drew a walk to give the Panthers a 5-3 lead. Then Max Ryerson pinch hit and delivered a sacrifice fly for a 6-3 lead.

Senior right-hander Rafael Acosta turned in a strong start for the Panthers, pitching a career-long six innings and allowing just one run on three hits. He tied his career-high with six strikeouts and walked just one.

Georgia State took an early 1-0 lead as Mize doubled with two outs in the second, and Maginnis brought him home with an opposite field single through the right side. Mize was 3-for-4 with two RBI on the day.

Jones hit his first home run of the season with a solo shot in the sixth inning. He is the 15th different Panther homer in 2023.

Georgia State hosts Alabama State Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
