Maginnis, Jackson Homer as Panthers Take Series with 6-4 Win

ATLANTA -- Michael Maginnis and JoJo Jackson homered and Cameron Jones delivered the game-tying single in the seventh inning as Georgia State rallied for a 6-4 victory over Arkansas State to win the Sun Belt Conference series, two games to one, Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Georgia State (18-18, 7-8 Sun Belt) trailed 3-2 before scoring four runs in the seventh inning. Max Ryerson led off with a walk, Luke Boynton singled, and Will Mize sacrificed the runners to second and third with one out. That's when Jones ripped a single up the middle to score Ryerson with the tying run.

Jackson then hit a sharp ground ball to the first baseman, whose throw to second base was wild, allowing Boynton to score the go-ahead run. Jones advanced to third on the play and then scored on a wild pitch. Matt Ruiz put the Panthers up 6-3 with a run-scoring single.

Jones then moved to the mound and pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and freshman Brady Jones closed it out in the ninth for his second save.

Maginnis, the redshirt freshman infielder, led off the game with a solo home run, his third of the season, on the first pitch to give the Panthers a quick 1-0 lead.

Jackson, the sophomore outfielder, added a solo homer in the fourth inning, his ninth and No. 71 of the season for the Panthers.

Georgia State held that 2-0 lead until Arkansas State 12-20, 3-10) managed three in the seventh on a solo homer and a 2-run single. Freshman Davis Chastain came on with two on and on out but got out of the jam by striking out the final two batters.

Another freshman, Kameron Davis (1-0), pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn his first victory.

GSU starter Rafael Acosta turned in a solid start, pitching into the sixth inning and allowing just two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

"Anytime you win a series, it's a good weekend," head coach Brad Stromdahl said. "We're at the halfway point of the conference schedule, and we've learned a lot about team."

Georgia State faces a busy week with midweek games at Georgia Tech Tuesday and home vs. Mercer Wednesday before traveling to South Alabama for a weekend series.
