Ryerson Hits 2 of GSU's 5 Homers, Watson Earns 16th Career Win

ATLANTA -- Max Ryerson hit two of Georgia State's five home runs, and Ryan Watson earned his 16th career victory as the Panthers opened their Sun Belt Conference series against Arkansas State with an 18-13 win Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Watson, the senior right-hander from Sugar Hill, Ga., and North Gwinnett High School, became Georgia State's career leader in combined wins (16) and saves (12) with 28. His 16 victories are tied for fourth in GSU history.


Ryerson had a pair of 2-run homers, Luke Boynton hit a grand slam, Caleb Stewart hit a 3-run homer and Cameron Jones added a solo shot as Georgia State (17-17, 6-7 Sun Belt) improved its season total to 69 home runs, ranking in the top five in the nation.

In a 6-6 ballgame, Georgia State scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Stewart's 3-run homer, his first of the season, put the Panthers ahead, and then Boynton's slam, his team-leading 11th homer, gave GSU a 13-6 lead. Boynton also had an RBI-double in the third inning for five RBI in the game.

But Arkansas State (11-19, 2-9 Sun Belt) answered with five runs in the seventh, including a grand slam by Allen Grier, to pull within 13-11.

Ryerson extended the lead with his second homer in the seventh inning. He also hit a 2-run homer in the first inning and had two single in between for a 4-for-4 night. The senior now has nine homers on the season.
 
The Panthers added three more runs in the eighth on an RBI-double by Will Mize, a sacrifice fly by Dalton Pearson and a run-scoring single by Jesse Donohoe.

Watson (3-1) battled through a tough start to pitch six innings and earn the win. Freshman Brady Jones pitched a scoreless ninth with three strikeouts to finish the game.

The series continues with Game 2 scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. at GSU Baseball Complex on ESPN3.
