Mize, Ruiz Homers Lead Win over KSU; Panthers Have Won 8 of Last 9


ATLANTA -- Keyed by homers from Will Mize and Matt Ruiz, Georgia State scored 11 runs in the sixth and seventh innings to down Kennesaw State 14-8 Tuesday at the GSU Baseball Complex. The Panthers have won eight of their last nine games.

Georgia State (9-4) trailed 5-3 in the sixth inning when Cameron Jones delivered a 2-out, 2-run single to bring the Panthers within one. Max Ryerson singled to put runners at first and second, and then Ruiz hit a fly ball to right field that was dropped, allowing both runners to score to give GSU a 6-5 lead.

Two batters later, Mize hit the first pitch from reliever Nolan Silver high and deep over the left field fence for a 3-run homer, his fourth of the season. The 6-run inning put the Panthers up 9-5.

After KSU (5-6) scored twice in the seventh to make it 9-7, Georgia State answered with five more in the bottom half. Dalton Pearson and Ryerson had run-scoring singles, and then Ruiz homered to straightaway center field. His 3-run blast was his second of the season and extended the lead to 14-7.

Freshman reliever Brady Jones (1-0), one of six GSU pitchers, earned his first victory.

On a staff day, starter Cameron Jones pitched two scoreless innings, and the two-way standout also had two RBI-singles. He has now reached base safely in 29 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Ryerson went 3-for-5 with one RBI, Pearson had two hits and an RBI, and JoJo Jackson contributed an RBI-double.

Georgia State travels to Clemson for the final non-conference weekend, beginning with a 4 p.m. game Friday on ACCNX.
