Boynton Homers Again But Panthers Fall in DH at Clemson

CLEMSON -- Luke Boynton and Colin Hynek homered but Georgia State's late rally fell short as the Panthers lost 10-7 at Clemson in the second game of a doubleheader at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Clemson won Game 1, 10-2.

Trailing 10-5, the Panthers (9-7) scored two runs in the ninth inning on Cameron Jones' 2-run double and had the tying run at the plate before Clemson (10-6) escaped.

Boynton, the junior first baseman, hit his third homer of the series with a two-run shot to the opposite field and is now tied for the team lead with five. He also homered twice in Friday's series opener.

Hynek, the redshirt freshman catcher, followed Boynton in the fourth inning with a solo homer, his third of the season. The Panthers hit back-to-back homers for the second straight day as Georgia State pulled within 6-3.

After Clemson added two runs in the bottom half, Matt Ruiz delivered a two-run single in the fifth to again pull the Panthers within three runs at 8-5.

Jones had four hits on the day, including a 3-for-5 effort with two RBI in the nightcap. He has now reached base safely in 32 consecutive games.

In Game 1, Clemson jumped in front with five runs in the third. Georgia State made it 5-2 in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by JoJo Jackson and an RBI-double by Will Mize that hit the top of the wall in right field, just missing a home run by inches.

But the Tigers scored five more in the sixth to pull away. Three Clemson pitchers held the Panthers to just two hits.

Georgia State plays at Mercer Tuesday at 6 p.m. before returning home to open Sun Belt Conference play next Friday vs. Troy.
