HUNTINGTON –
Mikyla Tolivert scored 18 points and
Deasia Merrill scored 16 as Georgia State fell 50-45 to Marshall on Saturday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center.
Tolivert shot 7-of-16 from the field and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds to earn her first career double-double. Her 12 rebounds topped her previous high of nine set in the season-opener against Agnes Scott. The sophomore from Melbourne, Fla. is averaging 20.3 points in her last six games.
Merrill made 8-of-11 baskets and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Alyssa Phillip also contributed with nine points on 4-of-9 shooting with five rebounds.
Georgia State (10-15, 4-8 Sun Belt) made six of their first eight shots to jump out front 12-2 and led 17-4 at the end of the first quarter.
GSU outrebounded Marshall 42-30 and held them to 32.1 percent from the field and 3-of-22 from three. The Panthers led for most of the contest until the Thundering Herd took a 45-44 lead with 2:20 left in the fourth. Georgia State then evened the score with a free throw before Marshall (14-9, 7-5) hit the go-ahead layup with 21 seconds left and sealed the game at the free throw line.
Georgia State led by as many as 16 in the third when Marshall went on a 12-4 run to cut it to eight at the quarter-break.
GSU's offense went cold in the fourth, shooting just 1-of-11 as the Panthers were outscored 19-6 and failed to convert a field goal in the final five minutes.
Georgia State will face Appalachian State on Thursday, Feb. 9 in Boone, N.C. Tipoff is at 12 p.m.
