ATLANTA -- Georgia State hit four home runs, including Michael Maginnis' go-ahead, three-run blast in the sixth inning, and GSU pitchers combined for 17 strikeouts in the Panthers' 12-2 Opening Day victory over Cincinnati Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

Luke Boynton, Max Ryerson and JoJo Jackson also homered as the Panthers exploded for 11 runs in the seventh and eighth innings to win on Opening Day for the ninth time in the last 11 years

Georgia State trailed 2-1 in the seventh inning when Matt Ruiz doubled to right center to score Boynton with the tying run. Ryerson singled to put runners at second and third and chase reliever Jackson Murphy (0-1). After the pitching change, Maginnis, a redshirt freshman making his GSU debut, smacked the first pitch he saw over the right centerfield fence for a 5-2 lead.

Cameron Jones added a two-run single for a 7-2 advantage. Jones (1-0) also earned the win on the mound with one inning in relief.

Georgia State continued pounding in the eighth with a 3-run homer by Ryerson, the Preseason All-America who hit a school-record 22 bombs last year. Then Maginnis singled, and sophomore JoJo Jackson homered off the top of the scoreboard in right field for two more runs.

The game was scoreless for the first four innings before Cincinnati pushed across a run in the fifth. But Boynton answered for Georgia State in the bottom half by leading off with a towering, 471-foot homer.

The Panthers pounded out 14 hits, including a 3-for-3 effort by sophomore second baseman Jesse Donohoe.

Georgia State starter Ryan Watson, the fifth-year senior righty, allowed just one run on two hits in five innings while striking out seven. Freshman Davis Chastain debuted by striking out the side in a 1-2-3 sixth inning. Jones and Zach Ottinger also struck out three in one inning apiece and Aidan McAllister finished the game with the Panthers' 17th punchout of the day.

The four-game series continues with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.
