ATLANTA, GA --Mikyla Tolivert totaled 23 points, but the Georgia State women's basketball team fell to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 94-70 on the road Sunday.
The Panthers (4-3) had two players score in double figures, led by Tolivert, who had 23 points. Mya Williams tacked on 10 points and Crystal Henderson added eight points and two steals.
Led by Deasia Merrill's three offensive rebounds, Georgia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 12 boards that resulted in 16 second-chance points.
Georgia State did a great job disrupting Georgia Tech shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Alyssa Phillip led the way individually for the Panthers with two rejections.
How It Happened
Georgia State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 30-21 at the end of the first quarter.
The Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 50-34 halftime deficit.
Georgia Tech continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 73-47 advantage before Georgia State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Kaleigh Addie, to trim its deficit to 73-52 with 1:39 to go in the third. Georgia Tech countered and stretched its lead to 80-53 heading into the fourth. Georgia State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled 10 of the team's 19 third-quarter points.
Georgia State came out of the third quarter break clicking on all cylinders, going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Tolivert's layup, to shrink the deficit to 80-59 with 8:16 to go in the contest. Georgia Tech responded and outscored the Panthers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 94-70. Georgia State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.
