Panthers drop 3-2 match to UL Monroe

MONROE, LA --The Georgia State volleyball team rallied in the third set, but ultimately fell short on Thursday night in the fifth set (16-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-21, 12-15) against ULM on Thursday evening. 

The loss dropped Georgia State's record to 5-21 overall and 2-13 in Sun Belt action.

The Panthers offense was paced by Akira Burt, who finished with 11 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .429, and by Aaliyah Mitchell, who had 11 while hitting .346. got 24 digs from Livy Kowalkowski along with six blocks from Erin Wyatt and five rejections from Burt to lead them defensively.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Panthers found themselves in an early hole, losing a tough first set 25-16. Georgia State trailed by as many as nine points as UL Monroe grabbed the advantage for good at 13-12 in a set that was tied up seven times before the Warhawks took control.

SET 2 | A 25-15 second-set loss put Georgia State behind two sets to none in the match. Georgia State trailed by as many as 10 points as UL Monroe grabbed the advantage for good at 10-9 in a set that was knotted up five times before the Warhawks took over the lead.

SET 3 | Georgia State rallied back to pull within two sets to one, winning their first set of the match in the third stanza. The Panthers the set the third set 25-20. Georgia State took the lead for good at 16-15 in a set that featured 13 ties and eight lead changes. The Georgia State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. Georgia State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking seven UL Monroe attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 UL Monroe attacking errors on the way to victory.

SET 4 | Georgia State continued its comeback, winning the fourth set 25-21 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. The Panthers persevered in a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured six lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team was able to grab a lead larger than four points along the way.

SET 5 | Georgia State fell behind two sets to none but came back to even it at 2-2 before falling 15-12 in the final set. The Panthers came up short in a back-and-forth set five, losing in a stanza that featured three lead changes and was tied four times. Neither team led by more than three points in the set.

The Panthers look to rally in their final game of the regular season at ULM on Friday.
