Panthers fall 75-68 to Elon

ATLANTA, GA --The Georgia State women's basketball team got a 25-point showing from the bench, but fell 75-68 to the Elon Phoenix at home Thursday.

The Panthers (3-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Crystal Henderson, who had 15 points and seven assists. Patience Williams added 11 points off of the bench and Mikyla Tolivert added nine points and two steals.

Led by Deasia Merrill's four offensive rebounds, Georgia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 15 boards that resulted in 12 second-chance points.

Georgia State forced 19 Elon turnovers while committing 10 themselves in Thursday's game. The Panthers turned those takeaways into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Mya Williams led the way individually with two steals.

How It Happened

Georgia State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 23-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Panthers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 40-22 halftime deficit.

Elon continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 56-33 advantage before Georgia State went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Patience Williams, to trim its deficit to 56-40 with 16 seconds to go in the third. Elon countered and stretched its lead to 58-40 heading into the fourth. Georgia State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.

Elon kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 64-44 advantage before Georgia State went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Mya Williams' three, to shrink the deficit to 64-53 with 5:37 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept their comeback going, but Elon managed to hold on for the 75-68 win. Georgia State took advantage of eight Elon turnovers in the quarter, scoring 13 points off of those takeaways.
