ATLANTA, GA -- Mikyla Tolivert and Kaleigh Addie led the Georgia State women's basketball team to a 71-58 victory after fighting back from a 10-point deficit at 4:27 remaining in the third quarter to beat the Western Michigan Broncos at home Friday.
The Panthers (2-0) had two players score in double figures, led by Mikyla Tolivert, who had 19 points and two steals. Kaleigh Addie scored12 points off the bench, and Aniya Palmer added three points and five steals.
Led by Alyssa Phillip's four offensive rebounds, Georgia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 12 second-chance points.
The Georgia State defense was a problem in Friday's game, forcing 22 Western Michigan turnovers while committing 14. Those takeaways turned into 27 points on the other end of the floor. Palmer's five steals led the way individually for the Panthers.
How It Happened
Georgia State started off strong, putting together a 14-12 lead heading into the second quarter. Georgia State capitalized on five Western Michigan turnovers in the period, turning them into five points on the other end of the floor.
The Panthers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 33-25.
Western Michigan continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 45-33 advantage before Georgia State went on a 10-0 run to trim its deficit to 45-43 with 36 seconds to go in the third. Western Michigan countered and stretched its lead to 47-43 heading into the fourth. Georgia State took advantage of seven Western Michigan turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
Georgia State managed to gain control and had a 53-52 lead before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 60-52 with 5:17 to go in the contest. The Panthers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 71-58 win. Georgia State took advantage of eight Western Michigan turnovers in the quarter, scoring 14 points off of those takeaways.
