Men’s Tennis Drops Pair of Matches in Season-Opening Road Trip

Tampa, Fla.— Opening spring 2023 competition with back-to-back road matches in Florida, Georgia State men's tennis fell to Stetson, 4-3, and USF, 7-0, over the weekend. First-year head coach James Wilson and the Panthers will look to rebound as the team returns to Atlanta in two weeks time for a match facing in-state opponent Georgia Tech.

GSU entered the season coming off a highly successful 2022 campaign that saw the Panthers secure a third Sun Belt Conference title and earn a bid to the NCAA Championship for the seventh time in program history. The team returned to play with a pair of matches facing Stetson in DeLand, Fla. on Friday, followed by USF in Tampa, Fla. on Sunday.

The Panthers opened Friday's match against Stetson securing an early point in doubles with victories at court No. 1 and court No. 2. Fifth-year Roberts Grinvalds and freshman newcomer Gabriele Datei partnered at the top court and posted a 6-3 victory, while sophomore returner Edward Tymes and freshman Ricardo Batista clinched the doubles point with a win, 6-4, at the third court.

Fifth-year Diego Padilha and freshman Diogo Morais paired at the second court before ending the match 6-6, unfinished.

Datei earned a second point in the Panthers' favor with a strong win, 6-4, 6-1, at the third singles court. GSU then dropped at the top-two singles courts as Stetson tied the match, 2-2.

Tymes posted a victory at singles court No. 6 to regain the lead, 3-2, for GSU. Stetson once again tied the match at 3-3 after GSU dropped at singles court No. 4.

Despite a hard-fought battle by Batista at the fifth court, the freshman fell short by a narrow margin, 5-7, 4-6, as Stetson clinched match point with the win at the fifth position. GSU moved to 0-1 with the loss and prepared to return to play in Tampa on Sunday.

Entering Sunday's match facing USF, duo Grinvalds and Datei once again posted a strong performance at the top doubles court, but came up short, 7-5. GSU dropped at doubles positions No. 2 and No. 3 and the Bulls earned the first point of the match.

The Panthers began singles play and dropped on the first, fifth and second courts as USF secured the match victory. The teams played out competition with the Bulls adding wins at the third, fourth and sixth courts and ultimately earning the match victory, 7-0.

GSU begins the season 0-2 overall and will look to regroup leading up to a pair of matches in Atlanta entering February. The Panthers will travel uptown for a battle against Georgia Tech at Ken Byers Tennis Complex on Friday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. ET, then return home to host Furman at the GSU Clarkston Courts on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. ET.
