Panthers Secure 4-3 Victory Over Furman in Home Opener

ATLANTA -- New head coach James Wilson earned his first victory with the Georgia State men's tennis team in Sunday's 4-3 win over Furman at the GSU Clarkston Court behind singles wins by Roberts Grinvalds, Gabriele Datei, Edward Tymes and Diogo Morais.

In the Panthers' home opener, Tymes won his second straight match of the weekend a dominant performance playing the third court position as the sophomore knocked off his opponent, 6-0, 6-2, in straight sets and evened the match at 1-1. After GSU dropped at No. 6 singles, the Panthers took the lead in the match with decisive victories from Datei and Morais at courts No. 2 and No. 4, respectively.

Leading 3-2, Grinvalds battled at the top court for the Panthers playing from behind after dropping the opening set. With Batista also in a three-set battle at the fifth court position, Grinvalds fought back to claim the second and third sets and clinch match point for GSU with the win on court No. 1, 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The teams played out competition and the match ended by a final count of 4-3 in the Panthers' favor. GSU moves to 1-3 overall following Friday and Sunday's matches in Atlanta.

Georgia State opened the weekend with a match at Georgia Tech. The Panthers saw victory at the second doubles court to begin the match as fifth-year graduate Diego Padilha partnered with freshman Diogo Morais for a one-sided 6-1 victory.

Roberts Grinvalds and Gabriele Datei squared off against Andres Martin and Marcus McDaniel of Georgia Tech at the top court and saw a narrow defeat, 7-6 (7-2). Tymes paired alongside Ricardo Batista at the third court in a lengthy battle before the duo saw defeat, 7-5, and the Yellow Jackets secured the doubles point to take an early lead, 1-0.

After the Panthers dropped at the top-two singles court positions and fell behind, 3-0, sophomore returner Edward Tymes downed his opponent at the fifth court with a strong victory in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, accounting for the team's first point of the match. 3-1, down, GSU battled at courts No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 in tightly contested three-set matches on each court.

Despite battling at each position, GSU dropped on court No. 4 as Georgia Tech clinched and ultimately bested the Panthers, 6-1, at Ken Byers Tennis Complex.

The Panthers will be on the road again next week for a pair of matches in Florida, beginning with an outing against Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, Feb. 10. The match in Fort Myers, Fla., will be contested at FGCU Tennis Complex at 5 p.m. ET.

GSU then travels to Jacksonville on Sunday, Feb. 12 to face North Florida. Match time is set for 1 p.m. ET.

Information regarding live stats for both matches will be announced via the team's social and on the web later in the week. Follow Georgia State men's tennis (@GSUMTennis) on social media for continued coverage of the Panthers' 2023 season.
