Lewis Steps Into More Prominent Role

Football Practice Report Presented by Checkers

ATLANTA -- Georgia State entered the 2022 season with 18 returning starters, but one of the Panthers' first-time starters came through with a big moment in the season opener against South Carolina.

Making his first career start, sophomore wide receiver Robert Lewis caught a 17-yard touchdown pass from Darren Grainger to give Georgia State a 14-12 lead over the Gamecocks in the third quarter.

The Covington, Ga., native (Newton High School) has shown flashes the last two seasons, and he put an exclamation point on his 2021 season with a touchdown grab in the Panthers' TaxAct Camellia Bowl rout.

"The talent has always been there, and we knew at some point, he would be a dynamic player for us," said offensive coordinator Trent McKnight, who spent the last two years as Lewis' receivers coach. "He's always been one of the fastest guys on our team, but he knew there were areas he needed to work on, and it's a testament to him that he really put the work in this off-season."

Lewis and the Panthers host North Carolina in Saturday's home opener, with kickoff at noon at Center Parc Stadium.
