Panthers Split Day One of the Jacksonville Invitational

JACKSONVILLE - Georgia State opened day one of the Jacksonville Invitational with a victory over Presbyterian in four sets (26-28, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19) before falling to tournament host, Jacksonville (19-25, 20-25, 24-26).

Clara Bednarek got things started for the Panthers, opening the day with a kill off a Jenna Brown assist. Bednarek would finish the match with 12 kills, hitting .391. Laura Ehieze was the most efficient hitter for the Panthers hitting .429 with 10 kills. Julianna Truscott notched double-digit kills for the third time this season with 13. Isabelle Percoco added seven kills in match one as well.

Six of the eight Panthers who saw the service line, served at least one ace bringing the team total 16. Brown led the team with a Georgia State reocrd-six (in four sets), while Erin Wyatt and Maren Palmer both had three- including the go-ahead ace in the fourth set. Palmer also tacked on 21 assists and nine digs, just missing a double-double. The block was big for the Panthers, including the Panthers' match point when Percoco and Bednarek went up and sealed the deal for the Panthers' 14th team block. On the defensive side, Kowalkowski recorded 19 digs for the third straight game.

The Panthers dropped set one of the match but showed resilience and bounced back to win the match in four sets, including a second set victory of nine points.

The second match of the day was against tournament-host, Jacksonville. The Panthers got off to a slow start dropping set one to the Dolphins. Brown opened set two with another ace, finishing the day with eight. The Panthers kept the Dolphins within two for the first half of the set, but a kill and an ace from the Jacksonville outside hitter ignited their run. Set three began with a slow start for the Panthers as well, going down 12-4. The Panthers battled back and with two Truscott kills along with two kills from Kayla Broom, they were within one. A kill by Izzy Durnell tied the game at 14 all. Palmer served her fourth ace of the day before Wyatt put down her 11th kill of the match. The Panthers couldn't escape with the win though, despite pushing the game to 26-24.

The Panthers will play their final game of the Jacksonville Invitational against Chattanooga on Saturday September 2 at 11 a.m. ET.
