Panthers Tie Kennesaw State on Elena Diaz's Equalizer

ATLANTA— Traveling for a match facing in-state foe Kennesaw State on Sunday, the Georgia State women's soccer team tied KSU, 2-2, with junior midfielder Elena Diaz converting on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute to score the equalizer.

GSU jumped ahead early, 1-0, as junior forward Maddie Johnston connected on a goal for the Panthers off an assist from team captain Ana Diaz in the 15th minute. Johnston has now charted two goals on the season for GSU with the score.

With two minutes remaining in the first half, KSU evened the match with a goal in the 44th minute. The teams entered halftime tied, 1-1.

Entering second-half action, KSU notched another goal in the 70th minute to bring the score to 2-1 in the Owls' favor. Junior goalkeeper Jaddah Foos recorded three saves in the second half and seven in total for the Panthers.

Charting a total of 20 shots in the second half of play, the Panthers found the late-match equalizer in the 82nd minute with Diaz connecting on the PK. GSU ended the match attempting 26 shots with 10 shots on goal.

With the draw facing KSU, the Panthers move to 2-0-2 on the season.

GSU returns home next week and prepares to host in-state foe UGA on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. ET. The match will be hosted by the Panthers at the GSU Soccer Complex and is set to be broadcast live on ESPN+ with live stats available to fans.
