JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Opening the regular season of competition, freshman midfielder Gavin Williams helped lead the Georgia State men's soccer team to victory over North Florida with the newcomer's first collegiate goal in the 64th minute. Earning the Panthers a 1-0 advantage, Williams' unassisted goal marked the only score of the match as GSU closed out UNF and begins the season 1-0 with the win.
GSU traveled to Jacksonville for the team's season-opening match on the road. Originally scheduled for Thursday night, the match was postponed to Friday morning at 9 a.m. ET due to inclement weather.
The Panthers saw a scoreless first half before the freshman Williams stole the ball at midfield and beat the Ospreys' goalkeeper for the first and only score of the match. GSU charted a total of 11 shots with five shots on goal, while the Panthers' defense limited UNF to nine shots with only one on goal.
The Panthers are back in action on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. ET as the team hosts Mercer at the GSU Soccer Complex. Fans are encouraged to wear blue for the home-opening match.
Sunday's match will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with live stats available to fans. Follow Georgia State men's soccer on twitter and instagram (@GSUMenssoccer) as the Panthers continue the 2022 season.
