Panthers Fall to ULM in Sun Belt Tourney

MONTGOMERY -- Georgia State fell 8-5 to ULM in the opening game of the 2022 Guardian Credit Sun Belt Championship Tuesday at Riverwalk Stadium, ending the Panthers' season in the single-elimination game.

Luke Boynton his his 12th homer of the season and Cameron Jones had three hits including two doubles as the seventh-seeded Panthers (30-27) took a 5-3 lead into the eighth inning, but ULM (20-34-1), the No. 10 seed, hit two homers and scored five runs in the eighth.

"It was a great season for us. It's our third year as a staff, and we're making good strides. We've really put ourselves in position to take this program to the next level," head coach Brad Stromdahl said.

"It's extremely disappointing to lose today, but it's part of this process. We're going to learn from it and grow and come back stronger next season.

"I'm proud of this team for fighting until the end; we got the tying run to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings and it just didn't go our way."

In a scoreless game, Boynton hit his solo homer to left field with one out in the fourth. Dylan Strickland singled and Josh Smith doubled to put runners at second and third, and then Will Mize hit a ball deep to left center that the center fielder misplayed, allowing to score. One more run scored on a wild pitch, and the Panthers led 3-0.

ULM answered with three runs in the fifth, including a 2-run homer by Chase Dejean.

Kyle Hilton regained the lead for the Panthers in the sixth with a 2-out RBI single. Jones led off the seventh and legged out a double on ball just past the second baseman. Then Max Ryerson ripped a double down the left field line for a 5-3 lead.

Jones went 3-for-5 on the day to finish the season with a team-leading .380 average, the highest season batting average for a Panther since Chad Prain hit .394 in 2013.

The first-team All-Sun Belt Conference utility player also threw out a runner at the plate from right field and pitched an inning in relief.

The GSU pitching staff struck out 10 on the day to finish the season with a school-record 505 strikeouts.
