Abboud's Hit Caps 4-Run 9th, Lifts Panthers to 7-6 Win to Clinch Series

CONWAY, S.C. -- DeAngelo Abboud's two-out, two-run single capped a four-run ninth inning rally to lift Georgia State to a 7-6 win at Coastal Carolina Saturday at Springs Brooks Stadium as the Panthers clinched the Sun Belt Conference series with their sixth straight win.

Georgia State sits in sole possession of first place in the Sun Belt at 21-10 overall and 9-2 in the league. The 21-10 overall record is the Panthers' best start since 2011, and the 9-2 Sun Belt mark is the program's best through 11 games since joining the league in 2014.

Entering the ninth inning, GSU trailed 6-3 when Luke Boynton led off with his seventh homer of the season to make it 6-4. Dalton Pearson followed with a single to bring up Max Ryerson, who hit the first pitch into left center for a double to score Pearson and bring the Panthers within one.

Caleb Stewart walked and Josh Smith hit a chopper to short for a fielder's choice, putting runners at first and third with one out. JoJo Jackson struck out but Smith stole second to  bring Abboud, the super senior from Lawrenceville, Ga. (Brookwood High School) to the plate with runners at second and third. He hit the first pitch past the shortstop into left field, scoring both runners and giving GSU a 7-6 lead.

"Luke Boynton started it off, Ryerson had a big hit, and then DeLo (Abboud) came through with a huge clutch hit, but he's done that all year," head coach Brad Stromdahl said.

Ryan Watson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his team-leading sixth save of the season and the ninth of his career, good for fifth place in GSU history.

Reliever Duncan Lutz (2-0) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning.

"With our offense, we feel like we're never out of the game, but Seth Clark and Duncan Lutz did a great job to keep us in the game, and then Watty (Watson) finished it off," Stromdahl said.

The Panthers managed just two hits through the first eight innings but one of them was Cameron Jones' three-run homer in the third inning, a towering shot to left field and his fourth of the season.

"It feels great, but we still have a lot of baseball to play," Stromdahl said. "We just have to put our nose down and keep working and keep doing the things we do best. But I'm certainly happy with the position we're in."

Coastal Carolina fell to 16-12-1, 5-5-1 Sun Belt.

Georgia State will go for the series sweep Sunday in a 1 p.m. game on ESPN+.
