Panthers Tie School Record for Sun Belt Wins in Victory Over Texas State

San Marcos, Texas- With a pair of conference matches slated for the Panthers' weekend road trip to Texas, the Georgia State women's tennis team defeated Texas State, 4-2, on Saturday as Sofya Golubovskaya clinched the match point for GSU at the No. 2 court position. The victory marks the team's sixth Sun Belt victory and places GSU at a tie for most Sun Belt wins in a season since the Panthers' arrival to the conference in 2014.

GSU posted back-to-back shutouts in conference outings against Louisiana and ULM last weekend moving the Panthers to five wins in SBC play. Entering the team's weekend in Texas, the doubleheader offers GSU the opportunity to surpass the current school record set in 2019 that stands at six.

Senior Eva Chivu received Sun Belt Player of the Week honors for her efforts in each conference victory a weekend prior.
Following GSU dropping the doubles point entering the match, Chivu earned a point back for the Panthers at the top court position as her opponent was forced to retire and GSU evened the score, 1-1.

Pragnya Kumar posted another win, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 6 position as the freshman gave GSU a 2-1 advantage. Kumar has yet to see defeat in a singles match and currently remains undefeated at 7-0.

Angel Carney continued her winning streak with a victory, 7-6, 6-0, at the No. 4 court position as GSU added to its lead, 3-1. With 15 wins overall, Carney has now earned 14 consecutive victories in singles play and nears the school record for most in a season at 18.

Texas State managed to secure an additional point after claiming the No. 4 position. With the score at a 3-2 count, Golubovskaya earned a final point in GSU's favor with the clincher on court No. 2 as the Panthers defeated Texas State, 4-2.

Improving to 13-5 and 6-1 in conference play with the win, GSU also nears the school record for most wins in a regular season at 16 as well as total wins at 17. In the team's biggest test of the season to date, the Panthers will battle No. 68 UT Arlington on Sunday at UTA Tennis Center.

UTA currently ranks first place in the conference at 17-1 overall and 6-0 in SBC play. Match time is set for 11 a.m. ET.

Information regarding live scoring will be posted to the team's social media accounts leading up to the start of the match. Follow Georgia State women's tennis on Twitter (@GSUWTennis) and Instagram (@GSUWomensTennis) for more updates.
