8-Game Streak Snapped as Panthers Fall 4-2

STATESBORO -- Georgia State had its eight-game winning streak snapped as Georgia Southern rallied for a 4-2 victory Thursday at J.I. Clements Stadium in the opening game of their Sun Belt Conference series.

The late runs spoiled an outstanding start by GSU right-hander Trey Horton, who pitched five innings and allowed just one unearned run on two hits while tying his career high with seven strikeouts.

The Panthers (23-11, 10-3 Sun Belt) pounded out 11 hits but left 10 on base, while Georgia Southern (22-11, 9-4) managed four runs on just five hits, including two unearned runs.

Georgia State jumped in front with two runs in the first inning. After back-to-back singles by Griffin Cheney and Cameron Jones put runners at second and third with two outs, Dalton Pearson ripped a double down the left field line to give GSU a 2-0 lead.

The Panthers squandered chances to add to their lead after putting runners at second and third and fourth innings.

After Georgia Southern managed an unearned run in the fourth inning, the score remained 2-1 until the seventh. Jason Swann's 2-out single brought home the tying run, and then the go-ahead run scored on a throwing error.

Griffin Cheney, DeAngelo Abboud, Cameron Jones and Josh Smith had two hits each for the Panthers.

The series continues with a 6:30 p.m. game Friday.
