Jones Homers, Earns Save in 8-5 Win at ULM

MONROE, LA -- Cameron Jones homered at the plate and saved the game on the mound as Georgia State defeated ULM 8-5 in the final game of their Sun Belt Conference series Sunday at Warhawk Field.

DeAngelo Abboud added three RBI for the Panthers (15-9, 4-2 Sun Belt), who got back in the win column after dropping three in row.

Georgia State jumped on the Warhawks (8-13-1, 3-2-1 Sun Belt) in the first inning. After Josh Smith reached on a wild pitch, Max Ryerson doubled and then Jones belted his third homer of the season for a quick 3-run lead. Abboud added an RBI-single, and the Panthers led 4-0.

But ULM answered with three runs in the bottom half, and then tied the game with a run in the second.

GSU took the lead for good in the third inning on Abboud's sacrifice fly. The super senior infielder drove in another run with an RBI-single in the 5th for a 6-4 advantage.

That remained the score until the ninth, when the Panthers added two key insurance runs. Ryerson led off with second double of the game and scored on an error, and Kyle Hilton contributed a run-scoring single.

GSU starter Camren Landry struggled early but battled to pitch four innings before giving way to the bullpen. Mason Patel pitched a scoreless fifth, and then Chad Treadway (4-0) earned his fourth win of the season with 2.1 scoreless innings, including three strikeouts.

After Treadway recorded the first out of the eighth inning, Jones moved from first base to the mound and finished the game for his fifth save of the season.

Sophomore outfielder Dalton Pearson helped keep the Warhawks off the scoreboard in the sixth inning with his fourth outfield assist of the season and his ninth in two years as he fielded a double in center and hit shortstop Abboud, whose relay throw cut down Ryan Cupit at the plate.

Up next for Georgia State is a Tuesday game at in-state rival Mercer at 6 p.m. in Macon, Ga.
