Boynton Homers for Third Straight Game as Panthers Sweep Little Rock

GSU has won five straight and 10 of last 11.

ATLANTA -- Luke Boynton homered for the third straight game to give Georgia State the lead for good as the Panthers won their fifth straight game with a 12-8 victory over Little Rock Sunday at the GSU Baseball Complex. GSU completed a three-game sweep of the first Sun Belt Conference series of the season and won for the 10th time in the last 11 games.

The Panthers (14-6, 3-0 Sun Belt) trailed 8-7 in the sixth inning when Boynton blasted a two-run homer to right center. Batting next, Will Mize homered to left center for a 10-8 lead, and Ryan Watson closed it out with two scoreless innings for his second save of the series.

Chase Wullenweber and Max Ryerson also homered today, giving Georgia State nine long balls in the last two games.

"What a way to start Sun Belt play! Offensively, we got contributions up and down the lineup, and we pitched well and played great defense," head coach Brad Stromdahl said.

"I was really pleased with the in-game adjustments that our hitters were able to make. Home runs come when you're disciplined and you get your pitch to hit, and we were able to do that."

Trailing 3-2 in the fourth inning, Georgia State scored three runs in the bottom half on RBI by Ryerson (fielder's choice), Josh Smith (sacrifice fly) and DeAngelo Abboud (RBI-single).

Abboud was 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.

The Panthers added to more in fifth as Mize led off with a single and then Wullenweber, the GSU catcher, hit his first homer of the season for a 7-3 lead.

But Little Rock (10-8, 0-3 Sun Belt) answered with five runs in the sixth to take an 8-7 lead before the Boynton and Mize homers in the bottom half.

Georgia State used six pitchers in the game. Camren Landry (2-2) came on in the sixth after Little Rock's five runs. After allowing a single, he rolled an inning-ending double play. The sophomore right-hander pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the victory.

The Georgia State defense turned three double plays. The biggest one came on Watson's fourth pitch after entering in the eighth inning with runners at first and third and no outs and the Panthers leading 11-8. Boynton snagged Miguel Soto's line drive at first base and doubled off the runner. Watson got the next batter to foul out to end the inning and then retired the Trojans in order in the ninth.

Georgia State hosts No. 20 Georgia Tuesday in a game that will be played at Coolray Field, home of the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers, in Lawrenceville. First pitch is at 6 p.m.
