Softball Earns First Ranked Win Since 2018; Splits Pair with No. 22 Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Georgia State softball team opened Sun Belt Conference play with one of its most impressive wins in four years before splitting a pair of games at league favorite and No. 22-ranked Louisiana on Saturday at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.

The two teams will meet in the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

Georgia State (8-14, 1-1 Sun Belt) took Game 1 of the series 4-1 behind a pair of home runs from sophomore Carolyn Deady and strong pitching from Hallie Adams.

Louisiana (14-5, 1-1 Sun Belt) won the nightcap which turned into a slugfest as the two teams combined for seven home runs.

Game 1: Georgia State 4, Louisiana 1
Georgia State opened Sun Belt Conference play shocking No. 22 Louisiana 4-1 as sophomore Carolyn Deady hit a pair of home runs and the Panthers topped the Ragin' Cajuns for just the second time in 22 tries.

It marked the first win for Georgia State in Lafayette, second win ever against the Ragin' Cajuns, and the first win over a ranked opponent since defeating 18th-ranked Louisiana in Atlanta in 2018.

The Panthers got on board first in the top of the third as Bailee Richardson singled up the middle scoring Emily Brown to take a 1-0 lead on Friday night before weather suspended the game until Saturday afternoon.

The game resumed on Saturday in the bottom third. Georgia State doubled its lead as Deady hit her fourth home run of the season in the top of the fifth to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Louisiana got one back in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an Alexa Langeliers home run and that is where it would stand until Deady connected again in the top of the seventh for her second home run of the game and fifth of the season.

Deady finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored. The catcher is now batting .310 for the season.

Chloe Middlebrooks added one more run for the Panthers with a single to right, scoring Skylar Chavez and giving the Panthers a 4-1 lead.

Hallie Adams (2-2) earned the win allowing just six hits and one run while striking out five over 5.2 innings.

Kandra Lamb (4-3) took the loss for Louisiana despite allowing just five hits and striking out 13 over 6.0 innings.

Game 2: Louisiana 10, Georgia State 6
Louisiana belted out five home runs to earn a split with a 10-6 win over Georgia State on Saturday night in the second game of the day.

The Ragin' Cajuns got on the board in the bottom of the first thanks to a home run by Alexa Langeliers, but Sofie Mooney responded with a home run of her own in the top of the second to tie the game 1-1.

Louisiana added a three-run home run by Sophie Piskos and a solo shot by Stormy Kotzelnick to take a 5-1 lead thru two. Bailee Richardson responded with a two run home run in the top of the third to cut the deficit to just two.

With home runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, Louisiana took a 9-3 lead thru five innings before the Panthers responded with three runs in the top of the sixth thanks to a pair of Ragin' Cajun errors.

Jourdyn Campbell added one more home run for Louisiana in the bottom of the sixth to go back ahead 10-6.

Mooney (0-4) took the loss for the Panthers after giving up four runs in just 1.1 innings.

Meghan Schorman (4-1) earned the win for Louisiana after allowing three runs over 4.0 innings, while Foreman earned her first save of the season pitching 3.0 innings of relief without allowing an earned run.
