Cheney, Boynton, Stewart Drive in 3 Each as Panthers Win Fifth Straight

Schedule Update: Series Will Conclude with a DH Sunday at 12 p.m.

ATLANTA -- Griffin Cheney and Luke Boynton hit 3-run home runs and Caleb Stewart drove in three more runs with a double to lead Georgia State to its fifth straight victory, 11-6 over Presbyterian Friday at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The series will conclude with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at noon. No game will be played Saturday due to anticipated inclement weather.

After Georgia State (9-5) fell behind 3-1 in the third inning, Cheney quickly regained the lead with his fifth homer of the season, a three-run, opposite field shot that put the Panthers up 4-3 in the bottom of the third.

Presbyterian (7-7) answered with three more in the fourth, and this time it was Stewart, the freshman infielder, who gave the Panthers the lead for good. With bases loaded and two outs, Stewart smacked a bases-clearing double over the center fielder's head for an 8-6 lead.

That was still the score when Boynton pinch hit in the seventh inning and hit his 3-run homer, also an opposite field blast that gave GSU a commanding 11-6 lead.

Junior right-hander Joseph Brandon (1-0) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief to earn his first victory. Brandon came on with the bases loaded and one in the fourth. After hitting the first batter, he got out of the jam when first baseman Cameron Jones snagged a line drive and doubled the runner at first. Joseph then retired the Blue Hose in order with two strikeouts in the fifth

After a scoreless sixth by freshman righty Trent Reddick, junior right-hander Ryan Watson finished the game with three scoreless frames to earn his first save. He had three of the Panthers' 12 strikeouts.

The Panthers turned three double plays in the game. In addition to Jones' line double play, the GSU first baseman also started a 3-6-3 twin killing in the sixth inning. Catcher Kyle Hilton completed a strikeout-caught stealing double play in the first.

Right fielder Dalton Pearson also had a big defensive play in the second inning. On an apparent base hit to right field, he cut down the lead runner at second base, making the batter settle for a fielder's choice. That is the seventh career outfield assist for the GSU sophomore.
