Season-High 15 Points for Tehya Lyons

STATESBORO -- Georgia State fell 71-61 at Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon at Hanner Fieldhouse as the Eagles used a late run to pull away.

Deasia Merrill's basket tied game for Georgia State at 51-all with five minutes to play, but Georgia Southern (13-7, 4-4 Sun Belt) scored the next seven points and the Panthers were not able to recover.

Tehya Lyons scored a season-high 15 points off the bench for the Panthers (8-11, 2-5 Sun Belt), who split the season series with their in-state rival. Freshman Nyla Jean added nine points and Ashley Foster scored seven.

Georgia State used a strong second quarter to take a 31-24 lead at the half and then opened the second half with back-to-back baskets by Alex Gitchenko to extend their advantage to 35-24. But Georgia Southern answered with an 11-0 run to even the game at 35-all with five minutes left in the third quarter.

From there, the teams traded leads until Georgia Southern's late run. Terren Ward (22 points) and Ja'nya Love-Hill (17 points) did most of the damage for the Eagles, combining for 39 points.
