Getting To Know: Graduate Transfer Chloee Kleespies

As Georgia State beach volleyball prepares to open the spring 2022 season, our 'Getting To Know' segments will introduce the Sandy Panthers' four new graduate transfers as they get set to compete with the team.

Entering her fifth year of collegiate competition, Chloee Kleespies joins the Georgia State beach volleyball team as a graduate transfer following a decorated four-year career at the University of Toledo. Lettering in both volleyball and track & field with the Rockets, Kleespies is eager to begin her sand volleyball tenure with the Panthers as the team is set to open its season in three weeks.

The Lincoln University, Pa. native finished out her final season with Toledo indoor volleyball having accounted for 2,887 attack attempts— the ninth-most ever by a Rocket. As a junior in 2019, Kleespies earned Mid-American Conference West Offensive Player of the Week honors following a strong performance in the Wright State Invitational.

Kleespies comes from a family where success in athletics is hardly out of the ordinary. The youngest of four siblings, she followed in the footsteps of sisters Cassie, MacKenzie and Haley— all of whom competed in Division I collegiate court volleyball. The eldest of the bunch, Cassie, also lettered for Toledo.

The family's pedigree in athletics doesn't end there. Lettering in indoor court volleyball at the University of Arizona, Kleespies' mother later went on to compete for the 1988 U.S. Olympic Volleyball Team. A member of the school's track & field team, her father was also a student-athlete for Arizona.

When Kleespies isn't competing on the court, she enjoys spending time with her friends and three sisters. Her favorite activities and hobbies include watching movies and enjoying the outdoors as often as possible.

As for her career goal, Kleespies hopes to one day become a physician's assistant at an endocrinologist's office. Perhaps a tall order for some, Kleespies is well on her way having achieved academic All-MAC honors in her sophomore, junior and senior years at Toledo.

As Kleespies has adjusted to life as a graduate student in Atlanta, she's found herself growing closer to her teammates as she gears up for competition with GSU in the spring. Led by head coach Beth Van Fleet and assistant coach Tiffany Creamer, Kleespies feels optimistic that she can do her part and contribute to another successful season for the Panthers.

"I love the city," Kleespies said. "There is so much to do, and it's really fun being able to explore Atlanta with my teammates. I'm so excited to play under Beth and Tiff in my first beach season, and I'm looking forward to experiencing the differences between court and beach volleyball. Whether it's playing or cheering my teammates on, I hope to make an impact in our conference."

GSU will open its season in New Orleans, La. at the Green Wave Invitational on Friday, Feb. 25. The Panthers' first match will be against Tulane at 10:30 a.m. ET.
