Panthers Sweep Sunday’s Competition with Dominant Wins Over Florida Gulf Coast, UAB

Peachtree City, Ga.- Following the team's victory on the road over Kennesaw State on Friday, the Georgia State men's tennis team returned home on Sunday for a doubleheader of matches against Florida Gulf Coast and UAB. Hosting the match at Peachtree City Tennis Center, the Panthers posted resounding wins in both matches as the team defeated Florida Gulf Coast, 4-1, and closed out the weekend by posting a shutout over UAB, 4-0.

GSU established early momentum with dominant team play in doubles as No. 56 ranked duo Andrei Duarte and Roberts Grinvalds once again made quick work of top pairs from both teams by a count of 6-0 over FGCU and 6-1 over UAB. The Panthers secured the early doubles point in both matches and carried the momentum into singles.

Following up his match clinching victory in a return to the Panthers' lineup on Friday, senior Vazha Shubladze posted strong performances in both matches on Sunday as he collected a 6-1, 6-1 victory over FGCU en route to securing another match point for GSU and closing out the first match of the day.

Patrick Lazo finished unbeaten on the day with impressive outings in both singles and doubles play facing both teams. Finishing first in both matches in No. 6 singles, Lazo's efficient performance in the team's Sunday doubleheader was highlighted by a one-sides victory over UAB, 6-1, 6-0.

Harvey Maughan paired with Kevin Huynh in the No. 2 doubles position as the duo collected wins in both outings, including a 6-1 victory over UAB. Maughan also earned the Panthers a third point with a victory in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, over UAB in the No. 5 position.

Andrei Duarte posted a victory, 6-4, 6-2, on court No. 2 for the Panthers in the team's win over FGCU. Playing in the first position for the Panthers, Duarte secured the match clinching point for the Panthers as GSU shut out UAB and finished the weekend 3-0.

"Going into this weekend we knew it was going to be a tough three-match swing concluding on Sunday," head coach Jonathan Wolff said. "Kennesaw gave us all that we could handle at their place, but we were able to snag our first win on the road. It was amazing to see Vazha back in the lineup and get that clinching point for us. He's come a long way physically and mentally to prepare himself to enter back in our lineup and give our team the boost we knew we needed."

With the team seeing frequent adjustments in its lineup throughout the spring, Shubladze's return to competition for the Panthers marked yet another shift in the team's positioning

"It's awesome to see that everyone embraces their position in the lineup wherever they play," Wolff said. "They don't take any spots for granted and they're ready to go out and compete no matter where they play. It was really great to see the team step up and fight through the emotions and physicality of a doubleheader. We really stepped up and it's a true testament to the depth of our lineup and the belief that the guys have in themselves, their teammates and their coaching staff."

The sweep in competition over the weekend earns the Panthers three consecutive wins and moves the team to 6-4 on the season.

Resuming play next weekend with another trio of weekend outings, the Panthers are set to host a doubleheader of matches on Friday, March 4 against North Florida at 11 a.m. ET and Alabama State at 4 p.m. ET. GSU will then play an additional home match against Liberty on Sunday, March 6 at noon ET.
