Men's Tennis Splits Doubleheader with North Florida, Alabama State

ATLANTA- The Georgia State men's tennis team saw a doubleheader split in home matches against North Florida and Alabama State on Friday. Battling No. 68 ranked North Florida and coming up short, 4-3, GSU returned to play for the backend of Friday's slate and posted a shutout victory over Alabama State, 4-0.

Entering the Panther's three-match stretch at home this weekend, the team jumped out to an early lead over UNF with a victory in doubles. GSU added another point to extend the lead, 2-0, with Harvey Maughan's one-sided victory, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 5 position.

After maintaining the 2-0 advantage for nearly two hours, UNF claimed wins on court No. 4 and No. 6 to even the match at 2-2. With each of the top three courts battling in three-set matches to determine the winner, GSU dropped in the second position as UNF went up, 3-2. The Panthers responded by grabbing court No. 3 and another point with a Roberts Grinvalds three-set victory, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4, and evening the match back up at 3-3.

The contest was to be decided by the outcome in the No. 1 position. Despite an exhaustive performance by Andrei Duarte in a highly competitive three-set thriller, GSU came up just short in the top position as UNF narrowly secured the court and a final match point with a win, 4-6, 6-2, 6-7. The loss, 4-3, is the team's first while playing at home.

Returning to action on Friday evening, the team looked to rebound following the defeat as GSU faced Alabama State for its second match. The Panthers did just that— posting a shutout, 4-0, and regaining confidence and momentum heading into Sunday's third outing of the weekend.

GSU saw a quick doubles victory to take the early lead followed by three consecutive wins in straight sets on courts No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 to close out Friday's competition. Duarte returned to action with a short memory and responded by posting another strong performance in the top position and a win, 6-3, 6-1. Maughan also displayed another dominant performance in the No. 2 court position with a victory, 6-3, 6-1, as the Panthers went ahead, 3-0. Kevin Huynh then claimed the match point for the team with a clinch in the No. 3 court position.

Friday's split in competition moves GSU to 7-5 on the season. The Panthers will return to action for a fifth consecutive home outing on Sunday against Liberty at 11 a.m. ET. The match will be played at the GSU Clarkston Courts. Live stats will be available.
