Panthers Fall at No. 15 Florida in Series Finale

GAINESVILLE, FLA -- No. 15 Florida used a seven-run fifth inning to break open a tie game and down Georgia State 12-1 Sunday at Florida Ballpark and sweep the weekend series.

The game was tied after four innings, and in the top of the fifth, the Panthers (4-4) threatened with runners at first and second and no outs to chase Florida starter Timmy Mannion. Nick Ficarrotta (2-0) came on from the bullpen and ended the threat with a pop-up and an inning-ending double play. Then in the bottom half, Florida scored seven runs against three GSU relievers to break the game open.

Georgia State starter Dylan Matela was solid, pitching four innings and allowing one run on five hits with two strikeouts.

The Panthers scored the game's first run in the second inning as Josh Smith drew a bases-loaded walk. Georgia State could have added to its lead but left seven men on base through the first four innings, and Florida (6-2) tied the game in the fourth inning.

Sophomore first baseman Cameron Jones was a bright spot for the Panthers, going 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch. For the series, Jones was 6-for-11.

Sophomore outfielder Dalton Pearson also had two hits for Georgia State.

The Panthers return home to host Georgia Tech Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex. The game will air on ESPN+.
