#StateNotSouthern Sweep: Panthers Top Eagles 58-49

STATESBORO, Ga.-Georgia State held Georgia Southern without a field goal over the final 7:44 of the game to mount a huge second half comeback and sweep the season series from the Eagles with a 58-49 win at Hanner Fieldhouse on Saturday afternoon.

Georgia State (13-10, 7-5 Sun Belt) trailed by double figures with just over 12 minutes to play before holding Georgia Southern (11-14, 4-10 Sun Belt) to just seven points over the final 12:31.

Senior Justin Roberts led Georgia State with 14 points to help the Panthers win for the fifth-straight time and seventh time in the last eight games. It was also GSU's fifth-straight road win, among the top 10 longest streaks in the country. In the Panthers last three road games, they have held each opponent under 50 points.

Senior Eliel Nsoseme just missed another double-double with 10 points and seven rebounds, while senior Kane Williams filled up the box score with nine points, six assists, and four rebounds.

Andrei Savrasov led Georgia Southern with 21 points going 8-of-13 from the floor, while Prince Toyambi added 10 points and six rebounds. The Eagles were held to just 25.0 percent shooting in the second half and were outrebounded 22-13 in the second 20 minutes of action.

Roberts knocked down a quick pair of 3-pointers as the Panthers took an 8-2 lead just over two minutes into the game.

Savrasov propelled the Georgia Southern offense in the first half, keying an 8-0 run to give the Eagles a 14-10 lead with 11:34 to play. Savrasov made his first five field goal attempts of the game.

Following a 3-pointer by Roberts and 1-of-2 free throws made by Evan Johnson, the Panthers trailed by just one, 20-19, with 6:20 to play.

Georgia State's offense went cold and made only one more field goal the rest of the half, going into the locker room trailing 28-21 after shooting just 29.6 before the break.

A 3-pointer by Cam Bryant pushed Georgia Southern's lead to 12, 39-27, with 16:08 to play before the Panthers started to mount their comeback.

Back-to-back lay-ups by Nsoseme capped a 7-2 run that closed the Eagles lead to 42-36 with 11:37 remaining.

When Williams made 1-of-2 free throws, the Panthers trailed just 44-41 with 8:11 to play. Just minutes later another Roberts 3-pointer followed by a Hudson lay-up capped a 9-0 run to give GSU a 50-46 lead with 5:40 to play.

When Williams knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:42 to play, the Panthers went ahead 53-48 and the game was all but over.

Junior Jalen Thomas added eight points, four rebounds, and three blocked shots, while freshman Ja'Heim Hudson finished with five points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots.

• Georgia State and Georgia Southern were meeting on the 50th anniversary of the first game played in the series Saturday marked the 64th time the two programs have met.
• The Panthers topped Georgia Southern 79-63 before a sell-out crowd in the GSU Sports Arena on Thursday night.
• GSU has won 105 regular season Sun Belt games since the start of the 2013-14 season, the most in the league, while finishing in the top two of the final regular season conference standings six times.
• Georgia State has a 42-25 (.627) record in the month of February since the start of the 2013-14 season.
• Kane Williams moved into a tie for third on Georgia State's all-time scoring list with 1,515 points, tying Rodney Hamilton.
• Williams was making his 105th career start which also tied Hamilton for the most in program history.
• Since 2013-14, GSU has won more games (182) than any other NCAA Division I team in Georgia.
