Women's Tennis Defeats Lipscomb 4-0, Closes Out Weekend with Third Straight Win

ATLANTA- Resuming the spring season following nearly a month-long break in match play, the Georgia State women's tennis team closed out a triple-header of weekend competition by defeating Lipscomb, 4-0. The team posted its second shutout and third-straight win as Alexia Alvarez clinched the match for the Panthers with a victory, 5-7, (6-2), 6-4, in the team's No. 3 position.

GSU opened the match with strong play in doubles as the Panthers secured the first point and an early lead, 1-0. Sofya Golubovskaya and Angel Carney won in the team's first position, 6-4, while Andreea Stanescu and Ellie Aldrich saw victory in the team's No. 2 position.

With confidence and momentum entering singles play, the Panthers made quick work of Lipscomb in the sweep. Stanescu posted a victory on court position No. 2 and earned GSU a second point. This was followed by yet another dominant win by Carney in the fourth position, 6-0, 6-2, and the match-clinching performance by Alvarez to give the team its fourth and final point as GSU finished the weekend with three consecutive wins.

With a rested roster, head coach Hannah Keeling was optimistic at the start of the weekend. The Panthers' head coach believed that the long break in competition would be beneficial to the team while serving as both a recovery period as well as a time to reflect and learn from a season-opening weekend that saw the team drop its first three matches.

In contrast to the early season match play at the beginning of the spring, GSU displayed impressive team performances all weekend while reeling off three wins in four days— already a game more than the win total that the team managed last spring.

"I'm extremely happy and proud of how this team came out today and competed hard for one another," Keeling said. "What a great way to end the week and finish strong. The team played very well from the start today and gained momentum early by securing the doubles point. We will continue to keep building and pushing forward as we focus on the next matches ahead of us."

Moving to 3-3 on the season, GSU will return to play next weekend in another doubleheader of matches. The Panthers will face UNC-Greensboro on Friday, Feb. 18 followed by Elon on Saturday, Feb. 19. Both matches will be played at noon ET.
